John Prine died today from complications from COVID-19. It seems appropriate that it’s raining right now. The earth is crying over the great loss. He was an artist, a seasoned craftsman with words, creating songs that touched you at your core.
Cancer couldn’t stop him. After losing part of his neck and even sensation in his tongue to surgery for cancer in 1998, he spent time going through speech therapy to recover, but he did recover and he continued to write and sing. He was touring six months after losing part of a lung to cancer in 2013. It took a horrible pandemic to silence him and we mourn in the silence.
I found this Tiny Desk Concert where he performed in 2018 as he was releasing his last album, The Tree of Forgiveness. In the concert he sang a couple of new songs as well as old songs. With that in mind, I’m sharing two songs by him, one new, one old.
Thank you, John Prine, for the music and memories.
