I recently watched a video from a TEDx event from last December. It featured a makeup artist/actress who talked about the women who have sat in her chair and their comments about their looks; comments about how plain, or ugly or fat or defective they looked followed by apologies for having so little for her to work with. Her talk focused on how these beautiful women felt about their looks and how she has tried to help them see themselves as she sees them, beautiful, amazing women, with our without makeup. The makeup didn’t make them beautiful. They were already beautiful and the makeup only brought out what was already there. It was a really good message.
Tonight I found this song and realized I needed to share it here. It speaks to the same thing. We have let the media’s interpretation of beauty shape and distort our own self images to the point that we don’t think we’re beautiful unless we’re a size 0 or have perfect skin and hair or are over 5’7” tall (Thanks a lot Eileen Ford!) or any myriad of things that we don’t have but think we need to be beautiful. I like this video and I want all the women, young and old, that I know to watch it and realize how beautiful they really are and they don’t need anything more.
