Happy St. Patrick’s Day. In honor of the day, I’m sharing one of my favorite Irish ditties. And it’s quite lovely. There are many a version of this song, long and short. This one comes from one of my favorite movies, Waking Ned Devine. If you haven’t watched it, then go away and find it and watch it. You’ll not be sorry you did, me dear. As I listen to this song again and think of the movie’s ending, I’ve a mind that it should be sung at my wake, as well. Drink a toast, my loves, drink a toast.
The poem spoken in Gaelic at the beginning of the song is called Forever In Your Debt by Kirk Jones.
"Forever In Your Debt"
With thanks to those who blew the wind,
And those who sailed the ship,
We sailed it tight against the tide,
And I shall be forever in your debt.
Sláinte!
