Was in my allergist’s office waiting to get my monthly allergy shots (yeah, but it helps me survive living in this valley…) and I found a copy of Guitar Player on one of the side tables. The subscription tag was cut out so I had no idea who in the office might be a guitar aficionado. Of course they may have bought it for the cover, because that’s what got my attention… It was Keith Urban! He’s so dreamy…
Once I got my shots (one in each arm), I had to wait 20 minutes before leaving to make sure I didn’t have any kind of adverse reaction. While I sat there, I found the article and read all sorts of stuff about how this guy came about his guitar skills. Now, I took guitar lessons for a while in my teen years and have a poor, old guitar sitting in my office that I pick up every now and then and try to play. I like to play and I’m very lousy at it, but that makes me appreciate mad guitar skills when I see and hear them and this guy has some mad guitar skills. The article mentioned a particularly wild stunt that he performs at the start of one of his songs off of his 2002 Golden Road album.
And, how can you not love a guy who starts the record’s second song by audibly de-tuning his low E string directly to D before launching into the intro—a stunt he pulls off live.
I found a live version where he does that and it’s… so cool!
